DOUVRIS Karate & Fitness
The OAC is proud to have DOUVRIS on site – the premier karate and kickboxing in Ottawa and home of national and world karate champions. The DOUVRIS studio (dojo) offers Karate classes for kids and adults of all ages, as well as adult fitness classes guaranteed to get results!
DOUVRIS is a karate family established by brothers, karate champions, and Master Sensei John and Peter Douvris in 1984. DOUVRIS at the OAC is operated by Nick Douvris and multi-time world champion, Robbie Lavoie.
We are devoted to cultivating the practise of karate and we are a leader in the sport in Ottawa, in Canada, and throughout the world. We are also committed to the pursuit of fitness, fostering kinship, and developing leadership among people of all ages. We embrace the karate philosophy, which promotes individuals who are “inwardly humble and outwardly gentle.”
Karate for All Ages
Our karate programs include classes for children 4 years and up, as well as adults of all ages (including our 55+ Karate program). Karate is a unique martial art for its use of choreographed forms, called katas, which offer these proven benefits in children and adults of all ages:
- Improve focus and concentration
- Improve memory
- Quicken reaction time
- Improve/maintain balance and flexibility
- Develop self-defence skills and all-around confidence
- Improve performance in other sports: golf, tennis, squash, hockey, soccer, and more
DOUVRIS also offers the opportunity to participate in competition at various levels, including in-house tournaments, national, and international championships for those students who wish to take their training to the next level. Learn more about competition here.
Muay Thai & Kickboxing
Train with 4-time World Kickboxing Champion and International professional MMA fighter James Kouame! James has taught and conducted seminars all around the world (including Hong Kong and Scotland), and received his training in Muay Thai at the Fairtex Camp in Thailand.
Known as “The art of eight limbs”, Muay Thai will improve your strength, cardio, weight loss, power, flexibility, balance, agility, discipline and focus. Training will include pad and bag work, defense techniques, combination drills, and controlled sparring.
Various martial arts techniques from Thai Boxing and K1 (Dutch Style Kickboxing) will be used in a professional and fun atmosphere to improve your confidence, reaction time, balance, coordination, power, self-defense, flexibility , discipline and combat skills.
To ensure students are getting the maximum benefit from the program, assessments and grades will be provided every 3-4 months.
The Muay Thai & Kickboxing Program will begin on Monday, January 9, 2016, but everyone is invited to attend our free demo classes (Limit of 20 participants – register at the OAC Welcome Desk or by calling 613-523-1540)
